This information mainly applies to the MSM Professional Edition. The Personal Edition is license fee free as of MSM 2.0 and the Personal Edition can simply be installed on any appropriate PC.
One Time Licensing: MachStdMill Prorofessional Edition is licensed and activted via a traditional software license "one time" approach. Once activated a MachStdMill license will not "time out"; A purchased license permits continual usage of the licensed release versions. Dual Installations: MachStdMill Pro Edition licenses are configured for two simultaneous installations. This is to allow the user to run both the machine control and a Mach "sim" machine with the license.
MachStdMill Personal Edition may be installed on as many machines as needed as long as it is for personal non-commercial use only.
24/7 Store: The CVI software store enables license purchases & activations 24/7.
Online Activation: past the trial period, an installation must be activated. This requires a net work connection from the PC running MachStdMill. A network connection is required for installation activation/deactivation.
Optional use of Network Connection: MachStdMill does not require a network connection for operation.
(However, network dependent features will not be available to a user that chooses to run on a PC which is not network connected).
Bundled update period: A MachStdMill Professional Edition license purchase includes an update period during which all updates released during the update period may be installed and used. This period is designed to give the user an extended time after license purchase during which all MachStdMill updates are available.
After the free update period, subsequent product updates are available via purchase of an license update period. Each purchased update period will enable access to all updates released before the end of the new update period.
Update extensions are more cost effective for the user than purchasing a new license and include all features released as part of an update. It is not CVI's policy to artificially delay new features in order to bunch them together into a "new paid release version".
Update period extensions are specific to a MachStdMill license and are available to existing licensees via the CVI Customer service portal. License owners may log into their account via the customer service portal (account information is supplied as part of a license purchase) to see the upgrade/update options for their licenses.
For additional software license details, please see the End User License Agreement.
MachStdMill Licensing & Update FAQ: 1. What do I get when I purchase MachStdMill (MSM)?
MSM is a software package and like most software, CVI does not “sell” copies of MSM. Rather, MSM is licensed. What you "get" is a license to use MSM.
Physically, nothing is shipped to you when you purchase a MSM license. All the software and documentation is made available electronically via the CVI web site at www.CalypsoVentures.com
2. What does a MSM license permit me to do with the software?
The short answer is that you get appropriate rights to use the MSM software.
The MSM Personal Edition only allows personal, non-commercial use.
An MSM Professional Edition license is required for any commercial use.
The long answer is the contents of the MSM End User License Agreement (EULA). The MSM EULA is available from the CVI web site, in the downloads area.
3. What is the MSM basic license model?
MachStdMill is licensed via a traditional "one time" software license approach.
4. Does the software ever “time out” and stop working?
Licensed installations of Production Releases never time out.
Once activated a MachStdMill license will not "time out"; A purchased license permits continual usage of the licensed MSM production release versions. Additionally, production releases of the software do not time out.
Evaluation and Trail installations do time out:
MSM Professional Edition installs as a fully functional Professional Edition trial. The software is fully functional for 30 days with all the Professional Edition features. This allows customers to try out the software prior to purchasing a professional Edition license.
Alpha and Beta releases may time out:
If you are participating an Alpha or Beta MSM release, the alpha and/or beta releases may be set to time out some number of days after their release date.
5. How many PCs can I use MSM on?
End user MSM Professional Edition licenses permit you to use the software concurrently on two (2) PCs.
MSM Personal Edition licenses no restrict the number of PCs (for personal non-commercial use).
6. Can I move MSM Pro from one PC to another?
Yes, the limit is 2 PCs at a time. However, they do not have to be the same PCs forever. MSM can be easily moved from one PC to another. You can change PCs a often as you like.
7. How are software updates handled?
CVI does not schedule releases on a calendar basis. Instead the software is continually improved and updated and releases are published as they are ready. It is not CVI's policy to artificially delay new features in order to bunch them together into a "new paid release version".
8. What if there is a bug fix I need the day after I purchase a license?
This is why a MachStdMill license purchase includes an update period during which all updates released during that update period may be installed and used.
This free update period is designed to give the user an extended time after a license purchase, during which all MachStdMill updates are available without additional cost.
9. How long is the bundled update period?
At the time this was written, it is 6 months. While we don’t currently expect it to, this could change in the future.
10. What happens after my free bundled update period runs out?
After the free bundled update period, subsequent software releases are available via purchase of a “license update period”. Each purchased update period enables you to access to all releases published before the end of the update period.
If you purchased a MSM license on 1/1/2011 and the free update period was 6 months, you can run any MSM version released before 6/30/2011. You can continue to run any MSM version released before 6/30/2011 and you can continue to run those licensed releases forever.
11. Do I ever have to pay an additional amount to use MSM?
NO. You are not required to spend any additional amounts to run the licensed MSM releases.
That having been said, there are reasons that you may want to update your license to access newer MSM releases.
12. Why would I want a newer version of MSM?
Typically to get a new feature which has been added to the software or to get a bug fix which was discovered and repaired in a later release.
While we have been pretty informal about it, CVI only offers support for the latest production release and any available betas. Thus if you inquire about a known bug or a new feature that is not present in a release which you are licensed for, you may learn that that the feature/fix is available as of a specific MSM release.
13. I think I should get bug fixes for free forever and CVI should separate new features into new releases.
Please consider that MSM is a niche market boutique software product. Neither the Mach3 market nor the MSM price point support the manpower effort that would be required to retrofit, manage and distribute patches to prior versions of MSM. The Mach 3 add on market is just not large enough to economically support “pay one low license fee and also get free support forever”.
If you feel really strongly about this, please do not buy an MSM license (as that business model is not one which is offered with MSM).
14. So how do I license releases published after my free update period?
For the MSM Personal Edition, just install a newer release.
For the Professional Edition, upgrade your MSM Pro license to extend the “update date”.
Update extensions are more cost effective for the user that purchasing a new license and include all features released as part of any update prior to the new update date.
Update period extensions are specific to a MachStdMill license and are available to existing licensees via the CVI Customer Service Portal. To see the options available to you, log into your account in the Customer Service Portal (account information is supplied as part of a license purchase).
15. What update extensions are available and what do they cost?
Update extensions are more cost effective for the user that purchasing a new license and include access to all features released as part of any update published prior to the new extended “update date”.
Please check the customer service portal for the current update offerings for your license. As of the time this was written, two options were available:
A shorter update period (4 months; for those that want the least $ per purchase transaction cost) and a longer period (1 year; for those more interested in overall value that the single license transaction cost)
16. What if I want to use more copies of MSM?
For the MSM Personal Edtiion, just install another copy.
For the MSM Professional Edition, you will want to purchase additional MSM licenses (each license will include a new “free update period” as part of the new license purchase).
If you are interested in volume and/or OEM licensing, please contact CVI for additional information.
17. What do I get with a license update extension?
Rights to use any MSM version released before the end of the new update period.
Extending the example above (where the end of the original bundled update period was 6/30/2011), let’s say it is now 3/1/2015 and you want to access MSM version 23.3.5 – what do you do?
Purchase an update extension for your license. Lets say you purchase another 6 month update period on 3/1/2015. You would then be licensed to use ANY release published before 6/1/2015 + 6 months = 12/31/2015.
18. Is this like a software maintenance contract? Do I have to pay for all the periods in between the end of my first update period and the current date?
NO. You only need to purchase an update extension when you want a newer MSM release. CVI does NOT require that you “fill in gaps in the middle”.
In the example above a user might have paid $59 for the original MSM license on 1/1/2011 and (for example) $39 for the update extension in 2015 – for a total of $98 for 5 years (2011 thru 2015) of software releases.
We think that’s a pretty fair deal and we offer it because we want to encourage Professional Edition users to be on the latest releases (it makes our support efforts easier). Offering inexpensive update licenses is a positive incentive for users to stay up to date without forcing them to do so. At the same time it does provide a small amount to CVI to offset the ongoing costs of continual software development.
19. After I purchase a update extension, how does my software learn that I did so?
Reactivate your MSM installations by doing the same activation process you did when you first activated the software. This will cause the installation to connect to the license server and get updated with the new extended update date.
